afrofusion With Yeni Lucero Friday 5/7 from 5pm-6:15pm
Yeni Lucero (Afrofusion) was born in Chalchuapa, El Salvador and began her training in West African dance at the age of 15. She graduated with a BA in Dance and Choreography from San Francisco State University, studying Haitian Dance, Dunham, Limon, Ballet, Congolese, and Jazz, and received further training at the Ailey School. Yeni has performed with Ron K. Brown/Evidence, Robert Moses' Kin, Kendra Kimbrough Dance Ensemble, Diamanou Coura, Paco Gomes, Alayo Dance Company, and Annie Rosental & Delina Patrice. She has also appeared in multiple music videos and in video shoots with Kev Choice and the San Francisco Symphony. Yeni has taught at many schools and organizations in the Bay Area and internationally, including Sonoma State University, Pixar Animation Studios, Lines Dance Center, Adobe, Bottle Rock Festival, Elmhurst Community Prep Middle School, Cox Academy, San Francisco Salsa Rueda Festival, and The National Dance Company of Mozambique.
Afro rhythm & Movement With BYB CHanel bibene friday 5/14 from 5-6pm
Byb Bibene, an MFA graduate and award winner is a dance educator, choreographer and performer working in theater, ethnic, urban, and contemporary dance forms. His own technical and aesthetic sensibility is rooted in the culture and dances of his country of origin, the Republic of Congo. He has toured the world and performed internationally with companies and choreographers originating from Africa, Europe and the USA. Bibene is the Artistic Director of Kiandanda Dance Theater and Mbongui Square Festival. This Class introduces the fundamentals of various original ethnic dance forms found in the Congo in Central Africa. The students will familiarize with the musical and dance rhythms that define the cultures in the southern region of the Congo, and especially the Kongo People’s dance legacy, as well as the brief histories of the dances.
Hip hop Grooves With korea venters saturday (s) : 5/15, 5/29 from 12-1pm
Originally from Oakland, CA says her love for dance started in middle school while attending Oakland School for the Arts. Korea Venters graduated at the University of San Francisco, majoring in Performing Arts and Social Justice with a concentration in Dance. She is a current dance instructor at K Star Productions, Rae Studios, & Shawl-Anderson Dance Center. As a current member of both Rae Agency Dance Company and See Through Soul Dance Company, she hopes to continue using her art as a platform for community healing and education. She has performed at many festivals including: Art & Soul Festival, Black Choreographers Festival, Broad Statements Dance Festival, SF international Hip Hop Festival, and Versa-Style Hip Hop Dance Festival.
All classes are offered on a Sliding Scale (with limited free spots!) and we are accepting payment via PayPal. If you register on the spot, class is $15 and we can accept Cash or card.
Classes are held at our studio space (outside in the parking lot) at 1501 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland, CA 94612. We do have a limited capacity (to maintain social distancing), so please register ASAP to claim your spot.
